Finse minister van buitenlandse zaken bespreekt situatie Darfur (en)

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, representing the EU Presidency, met with President Idriss Deby and Prime Minister Pascal Yoadimnadji of Chad in N'Djamena on 20 November. Their talks focused on regional security issues, in particular on the situation in Darfur. EU Special Representative for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, was also present.

The security situation in the eastern parts of Chad has deteriorated dangerously due to the Darfur crisis and is a threat to the stability of the Central African Republic as well.

The EU and Chad both support the establishment of a strong UN-mandated peacekeeping operation in Darfur. In the discussions Tuomioja also underlined that the EU was prepared to support the democratisation of Chad, including assistance to the preparations of next year's parliamentary elections.
