Verklaring Solana en Michel over het proces van wederopbouw in Somalië (en)

dinsdag 14 november 2006

The EU High Representative, Javier Solana , and the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian aid, Louis Michel , expressed today their concern regarding the deteriorating situation in Somalia and its impact on the region. They stressed the importance to resolve differences through peaceful and political means.

High Representative Solana and Commissioner Michel call on all the leaders of the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs) and the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) to establish a conducive environment for the progress of the political process started in Khartoum and to consider the agreements reached as the basis for a political solution of the Somali crisis and the alternative to any form of confrontation.

In this context, they welcome all initiatives for reconciliation between the TFIs and the UIC including the joint communiqué of 10 November 2006 between the joint committee of the Somali Transitional Federal Parliament and the Union of Islamic Courts which provides a contribution in revitalizing the Khartoum dialogue process.

High Representative Solana and Louis Michel appeal to the UIC to fully respect the security of Somalia's neighbours and urge all regional partners to refrain from intervening militarily in Somalia and to foster the ongoing inter-Somali dialogue.

High Representative Solana and Louis Michel remain committed to support the TFIs as the only legitimate framework for governance in Somalia.
