Audit institutions produce joint report on air quality in Europe

Fifteen supreme audit institutions (SAIs) from the EU Member States and neighbouring countries have joined forces to produce a joint report on air quality. The report, published today, unfortunately shows that many countries in Europe are failing to meet air quality standards.

The project was coordinated by the Dutch and Polish SAIs. The European Court of Auditors contributed to this important joint effort with its recent special report 23/2018: “Air pollution, our health still insufficiently protected”, published on 11 September 2018. The conclusions and recommendations of the joint audit report are fully consistent with those of the ECA special report and show that more action is needed to improve air quality. Every year, air pollution causes about 400,000 premature deaths in the EU and hundreds of billions of euros in health-related external costs.
