Monday 25 April: Commission presents its 2015 Annual Report on the Rapid Alert System

The news:

The Commission will unveil on Monday 25 April the results of the 2015 Annual Report on the Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products, an efficient tool to keep European consumers safe.

The background:

Since 2003, the European Rapid Alert System for dangerous products ensures that information about dangerous products withdrawn from the market and/or recalled from consumers anywhere in Europe is quickly circulated between Member States and the European Commission, so that appropriate action can immediately be taken everywhere in the EU. It enables a quick exchange of information about dangerous products posing a risk to health and safety of consumers. Thirty-one countries (EU together with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) currently participate in the system.

The system covers the majority of products intended for consumers and for professionals, which might pose a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers (risks of injuries, chemical risks, etc.). The most common measures that can be taken include: ban/stop on sales, withdrawal of a dangerous product from the market or recall from consumers, and import rejection by the customs authorities.

The event:

Ms Věra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, will be holding a press conference on Monday 25 April at 11:30 in the press room of the Commission, in the Berlaymont building in Brussels. Following the press conference, some dangerous products removed from the market in 2015 will be presented in front of the press room. It will be available on EbS.

A press release, Q&A and infographic will be made available on that day.
