European Commission appoints new Head of Representation in Rome

Ms Covassi, who will take up office on 16 April 2016, brings to the post a solid experience of over 15 years in the European institutions combined with strong diplomatic and public advocacy skills.

From 2010 to 2014 Ms Covassi worked as First Counsellor at the EU Delegation to the United States of America in Washington DC, where she was in charge of the newly created transatlantic digital economy and cybersecurity portfolio. In this role, she coordinated efforts on internet governance, cybersecurity and online privacy, including political coordination with the EU Member States. In 2008, Ms Covassi was awarded an EU Fellowship at George Mason University (Arlington, U.S.), where she taught a course on New EU Media Policy.

Since 2000, Ms Covassi has held various positions at the European Commission in Brussels and Luxembourg mainly focusing on and promoting the development of the digital single market. She served as policy assistant to the Director for electronic communications during the time of the opening of the telecoms market that led to new services, lower prices for consumers and job creation across Europe. Moreover, she headed the team in charge of digital switchover and was deputy Head of the strategic units on the Digital Agenda for Europe and the data economy. In her latest post, Ms Covassi led the policy development on open data and a public-private partnership on big data.

Ms Covassi graduated, cum laude, with a thesis in comparative administrative and EU law from the faculty of Political Science "Cesare Alfieri" at the University of Florence (Italy). She holds postgraduate degrees from the College of Europe in Bruges (Promotion Tocqueville) and from the Academy of European Public Law (Greece).

In addition to her native Italian, Ms Covassi is also fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Background

The Commission has Representations in all 28 EU Member States as well as Regional Offices in Barcelona, Belfast, Bonn, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. The Representations are the Commission's eyes, ears and voice on the ground in all EU Member States. They interact with national authorities and stakeholders and inform the media and the public about EU policies. The Representations report to the Commission's headquarters on significant developments in the Member States. Since the beginning of the Juncker Commission, Heads of Representations are appointed by the President and are his political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
