The Juncker Commission: Maroš Šefčovič proposed as Vice-President for Energy Union, Violeta Bulc as Transport Commissioner

The Council of the European Union today adopted the list of Commissioners-designate amended by President-elect Jean-Claude Juncker yesterday to include the name of the new Slovenian candidate, Violeta Bulc.

President-elect Juncker is therefore now able to announce that he intends to attribute the Transport portfolio to Violeta Bulc, Slovenian candidate for Commissioner. Consequently, Maroš Šefčovič, Slovakian Commissioner-designate, will be allocated the Vice-President for Energy Union.

Next Steps:

Both Maroš Šefčovič and Violeta Bulc will now need to take part in a hearing in the appropriate parliamentary committees, in line with Rule 118 of the Parliament's Rules of Procedure . The timing and modalities of the hearings are the exclusive remit of the European Parliament.

In a next step, the European Parliament has to give its consent to the entire College of Commissioners, including the President and the High-Representative Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission. Once the European Parliament has given its consent, the European Council formally appoints the European Commission, in line with Article 17(7) TEU.
