'Albanië maakt grote stappen voorwaarts naar eventuele Europese integratie' (en)

Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met with the President of Albania, Bujar Nishani, in Brussels today to discuss the latest developments in Albania´s integration process. Commissioner Füle congratulated President Nishani on his appointment recalling the key role of the President in promoting cross-party dialogue and the continuation of the reform process in the country based on inclusivity.

He stated that Albania has a real perspective for progress on its European path, provided the country delivers a critical mass of concrete results in addressing the 12 key priorities from the Commission´s Opinion. This includes notably the adoption of the Law on High Court and the completion of the parliamentary reform. The reform of the immunities system will be also important. Commissioner Füle also stressed that as regards the rule of law, Albania needs to intensify its efforts to build up an independent and efficient judiciary and to establish a solid track record in the fight against corruption and organised crime. In this context he welcomed President Nishani's strong commitment to engaging in judicial reforms and to European integration.

Commissioner Füle also welcomed Albania's commitment to regional peace and stability and encourage the country to continue its constructive approach to regional cooperation.

Commissioner Füle reiterated the European Commission´s engagement and full support for Albania´s European perspective and invited the country to remain focused on comprehensive reforms which are necessary to further anchor it in its European future.
