Statement of Herman Van Rompuy,

President of the European Council,

following the meeting with

Prime Minister of Iceland, Ms. Johanna Sigurðardóttir

I was pleased to meet Prime Minister Johanna Sigurðardóttir today and welcome the good progress made so far in the EU accession negotiations with Iceland. This progress is due to the high level of confidence and cooperation between all parties involved.

The Icelandic Government has demonstrated strong commitment to the EU accession process. I noted that also the majority of the Icelandic public continues to support the accession talks. Strong public support remains essential for EU enlargement, in candidate countries and in EU Member States.

We also discussed the current economic and financial situation in Europe. In this context, I informed Prime Minister Sigurðardóttir of the comprehensive measures which the euro area Heads of State and Government have taken to address the sovereign debt crisis in some EU Member States. I took note of Iceland's improving economic situation and complemented Iceland for completing the IMF programme.
