Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, has paid tribute to the Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, who was named today as the winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature.

"On behalf of the European Commission, I would like to convey our warmest congratulations to Tomas Tranströmer. This is a very well deserved honour for one of the greatest poets of his generation and a man who has had a profound influence in his field for more than half a century," she said.

Tranströmer, whose best known works include Den stora gåtan (The Great Enigma), is the eighth European to win the Nobel literature prize in the past decade.
