Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité organiseert conferentie 'Consumption without borders' (en)

On Friday, 18 March the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will mark the annual celebration of its European Consumer Day by organising a conference entitled 'Consumption without borders'. The event will be hosted in Budapest, at the Faculty of Commerce, Catering and Tourism of the Budapest Business School. The conference has been organised in cooperation with the European Commission, the Hungarian Authority for Consumer Protection and the Hungarian Economic and Social Council.

There will be a number of notable speakers, including Staffan Nilsson, president of the EESC, Dr Szöllosi László, deputy state secretary in the Hungarian Ministry for National Economy, Paraskevi Michou, director of DG Justice (JUST) in the European Commission, Jacqueline Minor, director of DG Health and Consumers (SANCO), János Tóth, co-president of the Hungarian Economic and Social Council. There will also be recorded messages provided by Viviane Reding, vice-president of the European Commission and commissioner for justice, fundamental rights and citizenshipand John Dalli, commissioner for health and consumer policy.

This event coincides with the adoption of the exploratory opinion 'Consumers and Cross-borders possibilities within the Single Market'. This opinion was drawn up at the request of the Hungarian presidency.

The exploratory opinion concluded that there is a need to kick-start discussions on establishing a new approach to consumer policy, with a view to 2030.

In the opinion the EESC makes a number of specific recommendations regarding the following issues:

  • Review of the directive on unfair commercial practices
  • Adoption of a legal instrument for collective action at EU level
  • Review of the "package travel" directive and the legislation on air passengers' rights
  • Improvement of the Single market in retail financial services
  • Adoption of measures in the framework of the Digital agenda
  • Assessment of consumer needs in local cross-border trade.
