The EESC's stance on security scanners at EU airports and the EU's roadmap for a low-carbon energy system will be discussed at the upcoming plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee on 16 and 17 February. Mercedes Bresso, president of the Committee of Regions, will attend the plenary session to give her recipe for the success of the Europe 2020 strategy.

Venue: József Antall building, European Parliament

Schedule: CoR president Mercedes Bresso will attend the plenary session at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16

In a bid to deepen relations between the EU's two advisory bodies, Staffan Nilsson, President of the EESC invited Mercedes Bresso, President of the Committee of the Regions to participate in the plenary session. Ms Bresso will speak about the need to secure a strong sense of ownership for the new Europe 2020 strategy: this is essential if the strategy is to be a success. Ms Bresso will also call for a strong partnership with local and regional players, social partners and civil society.

The EESC is likely to express its doubts about security scanners' ability to achieve maximum aviation security. It will not shy away from venting its concerns about the potential infringement of fundamental rights by the use of security scanners and the health risks from the radiation they emit.

The Committee is also planning to adopt an opinion on the roadmap for a low-carbon energy system by 2050, which was requested by the European Commission to help it draft the strategy on the issue. The EESC will present its recommendations for long- and short-term actions and targets and will outline its view on measures to be taken at both European and global level to meet the challenge of creating a "decarbonised" energy system by 2050.
