Jonge Europeanen laten zich horen via een 'Europese soundwave' (en)
On Thursday 30 April 2009, at 3.30 p.m. CET young Europeans will gather in Berlin, Milan and Prague to ask loud and clear: « Can you hear me Europe? ». Thousands of other young people from Venice to Vilnius will join them from parks and squares, from their windows or from their mobile phones and webcams to create a "European soundwave" that symbolically demonstrates the importance of their voice in the upcoming European elections.
This giant shout in the Piazza Duomo (Milan), Stromovka Park (Prague) and Alexanderplatz (Berlin) will take place as part of an EU-wide campaign run by the European Commission and MTV Networks International to prompt young people to express their views about the European Union and, ultimately, go to the polls in June.
Margot Wallström , Vice-President of the European Commission said: "I want to hear that shout! All politicians should be listening for the voices of young people. But if you really want the politicians to listen, find out about the candidates and political parties in your country, decide who you want to represent you and use your vote in the European elections in June."
"I believe that the sound wave produced by young Europeans will be heard and will be a positive symbol of people’s empowerment," said Antionio Campo dall’Orto, Executive Vice President of Music Brands for MTV Networks International.
The event in the three key venues will be filmed by MTV and animated by celebrity guests, such as German DJ Paul Van Dyk, Italian band Lost and Czech music artist David Deyl. The footage will then feature as a core part of the second phase of the campaign – initially launched across the MTV network on the 6th of April – aimed at motivating young people to use their vote at the European elections.
The multimedia campaign features a variety of TV clips broadcast across the MTV network in Europe, the celebrity animated shouting event in Berlin, Milan and Prague, video clips on the internet and a multilingual interactive website with social networking applications: www.caneuhearme.eu. The website includes messages from artists such as Depeche Mode, Lenny Kravitz, Tiziano Ferro and The Veronicas.
