Nauwere juridische samenwerking tussen Eurojust en Amerika (en)

The Council of the European Union approved a cooperation agreement on the exchange of information between Eurojust and the United States of America. Eurojust is an EU body with a view to improving cooperation between prosecutors in the EU countries and promoting coordination of transnational investigation and prosecution measures. The 25 national members of Eurojust are prosecutors, judges or police exercising corresponding powers sent by each EU country.

The agreement will enable Eurojust and the United States to arrange common meetings at which data regarding cases under evaluation of charges are considered. The agreement is particularly important for the investigation of cases to do with terrorism.

The purpose of the agreement is to enhance and facilitate close cooperation between prosecution and investigation authorities in the EU and the US and to assess crime trends. In practice, the national members of Eurojust may, for instance, participate in meetings arranged by US authorities. Correspondingly, the national authorities of the United States may participate in meetings arranged by Eurojust dealing with specific criminal cases and in expert meetings discussing criminal phenomena on a more general level. In addition, the United States may second a liaison prosecutor who will operate at Eurojust's premises.

The Eurojust's national members approved the agreement in September 2006.
