Italian Minister of Productive Activities and President of the European Union Energy Council, Antonio Marzano, and European Commission Vice-President, Loyola de Palacio, will put security of energy systems, in particular electrical power, at the top of the agenda for the next Energy Council meeting.

The Italian Presidency, agreeing with plans being prepared by the Commission, believes urgent measures are needed at EU level to guarantee the security of energy supply throughout the EU.

Energy Ministers will discuss the security of electrical power on the basis of a communication which will be presented by Loyola De Palacio soon. This joint initiative stems from the desire to be able to respond effectively at EU level to events like those which occurred recently in some Member States. It supplements and strengthens the strategy for the completion of the single market in energy.

Topics discussed will be infrastructure problems, the roles of stakeholders in the energy sector, and the specific measures required to ensure there is sufficient energy capacity (in particular electricity) to keep the single European market functioning smoothly and to deal with any crises.
