Statement by Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides on the earthquake in the Aegean Sea

An earthquake has struck the Greek and Turkish coasts in the early hours of this morning, with initial reports of casualties and damages including on the island of Kos.

I convey the EU's solidarity with the people affected and my deep heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost loved ones. At this time our thoughts are also with the first responders, medical staff and people working on the scene.

The EU offers its full support to help.

The Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre, which monitors natural disasters 24/7, is closely following developments and stands ready to coordinate any assistance requested.

The EU's emergency Copernicus satellite mapping system is also available to help the national civil protection authorities.
