8 December: The Commission presents an Action Plan on the security of travel documents

The news:

The Commission will present an Action Plan to enhance the overall security of travel documents to combat the increasingly significant phenomenon of travel document fraud. The growing trend in this type of fraud has been highlighted by the recent terrorist attacks in Europe. In addition, it has become an enabler of organised crime and is also linked to the trafficking of human beings and migrant smuggling.

The background:

As outlined in the Communication of 6 April 2016 on Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security in order to enhance security and strengthen our borders, beyond well-performing systems, travel and identity documents must be authenticated easily and securely. To that end, the Commission announced that it will present measures to fight against document fraud by improving electronic document security and ID management. In September, the Commission published Communication on enhancing security in a world of mobility, in which it committed to adopting an Action Plan on document security by December 2016.
