Europese Commissie benoemt nieuw hoofd van vertegenwoordiging in Cyprus (en)

Brussels, 7 March 2012 - Mr. Georgios Markopouliotis will take office as Head of the European Commission Representation in Nicosia on 16 March 2012.

Mr. Markopouliotis brings to this new appointment over 25 years of experience in the Commission, having served in a number of advisory and managerial posts.

Joining the Commission in 1987, he served in his early years as a member in the Cabinets of Commissioners Bruce Millan and Monika Wulf-Mathies, who were responsible for Regional Policies and the Cohesion Fund under the Delors II and Santer Commissions respectively.

Since 1996 Mr. Markopouliotis held several managerial positions, initially in the Directorate-General for Employment and Social Affairs, then as the Head of the Representation of the Commission in Athens, notably covering the time of the Greek Presidency in the first half of 2003.

In 2006, after returning to Brussels, he headed the Unit in DG Communication dealing with the Commission's communications priorities and, later, was in charge of the coordination of the European Commission Representations in the 27 Member States.

From February 2010 to December 2011, Mr. Markopouliotis was the Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Maria Damanaki, responsible for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Mr. Markopouliotis read Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research in the UK between 1978 and 1986 at the Universities of Essex, London School of Economics and Imperial College London. In 1986 and before joining the Commission, he worked as a statistician in a UK-based insurance company.

His rich and varied experience will enable the Commission Representation in Cyprus to play a key role in communicating with citizens and the media, and will help enhance relations between the European Commission and national and local authorities and stakeholders. Moreover, his previous experience and sound knowledge of the workings of a Commission Representation will be a useful asset for a close and effective cooperation with the Cypriot authorities as they prepare to take up their first ever Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2012.
