ESU is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with students and student organisations around the globe to mark International Student's Day today, 17th November, commemorated for the last 67 years in honour of the more than 1200 students who died as a result of a Nazi assault on Prague University in 1939. It is a day for reflection on the battles that students are still having to face across Europe and around the world as they try to obtain an education. And it is a day which reaffirms our resolve to make quality higher education a choice and a right for all. It gives added emphasis to our new student rights campaign, 'Light on the rights', and to our work on making the European Students' Rights Charter which we developed last year a cornerstone of the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA), and a internationally recognised reference point for students and governments alike. |

ESU joined forces with OBESSU (Organising Burea of European School Student Unions) to launch a new campaign (www.lightontherights.eu) to promote the rights of school and university students at this year's European Social Forum. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and underline the importance of a legal framework allowing students across Europe to focus on their education. A key focus will be on bringing the attention of both school and university students to OBESSU's Declaration of School Students Rights and ESU's Charter of the Student Rights, as well as on assessing public opinion on the issue of student rights. Efforts will also focus on obtaining official recognition of both the Declaration and the Charter by the EU institutions, the Council of Europe and National governments. ESU’s European Students Rights Charter is set to become a cornerstone for all developments of the European higher education area and a point of reference for students and governments alike.

ESU celebrated a year of achievements with a highly successful validation conference to mark the culmination of its 'Let's Go' mobility campaign with Education International. Delegates from across Europe and including representatives from the European Commission gathered at the Lille 3 university on 6th and 7th October to assess the progress made over the last twelve months and to define the aims and shape a strategy for taking the campaign forward for the future.
The conference saw the launch of a major new publication, 'Mobility Barometer' which, for the very first time, provides information from all 46 signatories to the Bologna Process on the current levels of, and barriers to, mobility for both staff and students in higher education. The full report can be downloaded here. |
